Cannes (!) is literally happening as we speak and I am not there, which means I am doing the next best thing: scrolling through photos of the red carpet and whispering in French to my laptop. Behold, les onglets I have ouvert this week:
9 I Think You Should Leave tabs
How to describe this gorgeous little hot dog of a sketch show, now in its second season? Maybe by its comedian creator, absurd king and permanently-100-dB Tim Robinson. Maybe by its memes — so ubiquitous they’ve been famously and correctly cited by U.S. politicians. Maybe…we should just let the official ITYSL fandom Twitter account speak for itself?
No sorry, that’s the wrong link, I meant this one:
I’m so sorry, that’s the wrong one again, third time lucky…
Theeeerreeee we go. The official ITYSL fandom Twitter account said it best after all: it’s hours and hours of footage of real people falling out of coffins at funerals!
And yes, it is also many other things — an explosion of narcissistic online characters brought into the frenzied chaos of the real world, an indictment on workplace culture, a retaliation against ridiculous and farcical social norms — but at its most resonant, it’s just a perfect sketch show that reflects back onto us the surrealism of everyday life.

Oh and it’s also an instructional video on how to eat sloppy steaks.
And also…the root cause of everyone’s sleep deprivation?
And also an exercise in self-discipline.

It is all of those things, but what it is not is a 2020 psychological horror starring Amanda Seyfried and Kevin Bacon. (Sorry to this man.)
There has never been — and there will never be — another show like I Think You Should Leave, and this Vulture profile with Tim Robinson scratches the surface of its staunch idiosyncrasies. On Robinson, Keegan-Michael Key (of Key and Peele fame) says: “He’s very adept at playing that weird guy at the bus stop. But what makes him special, this ineffable quality he has, is that he really believes his point of view, and he doesn’t understand why you don’t understand his point of view.”
3 Atypical tabs
There are many things about Atypical’s last season that will make you (fine, us) cry. Chief among them is the fact that this is the show’s final season, and we’re saying goodbye to this weird, warm sit-com’s motley crew of characters who we’ve watched evolve over the past four years. It’s like a farewell to a best friend who’s moving overseas, which is an experience I have not had to deal with for 18 months (for…obvious reasons), thereby making it EXTRA sad.
This just about sums up my feelings:
And this too. We stan etc. etc.
Plus, ICYMI, here’s a look back at the show with a roundtable of cast and creators, where they talk about the significance of disability representation, the process of creating a sit-com that’s so heartfelt, and the trials and tribulations of Atypical’s central, slightly dysfunctional family.
1 Fear Street tab
Fear Month continues on our podcast, The Big Film Buffet! Before the last part of the Fear Street trilogy drops this Friday, take a listen to this instalment with witch expert, novelist, and film critic Maria Lewis, who breaks down the spooky, salacious timeline of witches in pop culture — how they’ve evolved, and how they’re inevitably tied to notions of femininity and subservience throughout history.
Okay, 1 more tab
Everyone must go and watch this video of Tilda Swinton pranking Timothée Chalamet at CANNES right now. Thank me later in the comments.
